Image sizes that are too large can impact the deck download speeds in the mobile app. Therefore, if you’re creating your own Classes and Decks, it’s best to keep image sizes as low as possible without sacrificing quality.
Use the guidelines below to create the optimal images for your Classes and Decks:
- Ornamental - These are images that add personality (e.g. a China flag in a question about China).
- Pertinent - These are images that are needed for the question or answer (e.g. "This is the flag for what country?" / China). If the image is referenced in the text, it’s pertinent. If not, it’s ornamental
- Medical/Technology - Images related to medical or technology topics need to be very detailed so it can be enlarged/zoomed.
If you are looking for the ideal image size for your class icon, we recommend an image that renders well as a square. We recommend a 1:1 aspect ratio common sizes that we find look great are 1024x1024 or 1920x1920.

On the mobile app, in terms of image shape, our image picker includes a built in cropper that encourages a square crop, however you’re free to crop the image however you wish. For more information about adding images to your flashcards, read this article.
