How does Smart Study work in mobile?

Brainscape is bringing Smart Study back to our mobile app, now with global study mix functionality for an even smarter, smoother study experience!

OVERVIEW

Smart Study lets you build a single study session from across the classes you’re currently learning. Choose which classes and decks you want to include, then adjust how frequently you’d like material from each one to appear. In other words, you can create your own perfectly balanced study mix instead of grinding through one subject at a time.
 

And there’s a sneaky cognitive-science bonus to all that mixing: interleaving. Interleaving means alternating between different topics or types of problems during a study session, rather than studying one thing in a long, uninterrupted block. That extra switching makes your brain work a little harder to identify what knowledge it needs to retrieve, which can ultimately help strengthen learning and memory.

Here’s a quick explanation of how interleaving works.

"Interleaving trains the brain to traverse between concepts by creating different practices rather than relying on rote response or muscle memory. Interleaving deepens long-term memory (brain and muscle) associations because the mind and body are retrieving various responses."

How it works

• When a user taps the config icon, the existing Mastery bars should be replaced with a "frequency slider"
• User can adjust the sliders and then tap the config icon to revert back to the dashboard
• Each class's initial frequency weighting should start at 100%, and hitting the 'Reset' button will bring them back to the original state of 100%
• If you move the slider all the way to the left (effectively 0%) then that removes the class from the study mix
• Only decks that have been downloaded will appear in the study mix

Click the config icon next to the Study button to be able to adjust the frequency using the sliders for each of the classes you'd like added to your Study Mix.  The image on the right shows the slider frequency set for the classes in this Study Mix.  This will adjust how much of your new study mix is made up of each class.  The 'Reset' button allows you to reset back to 100%.  Click the config icon to return to the dashboard view after you are done or click STUDY to begin your session.

In the Class screen you can view your mastery tracking for each deck, as well as the option to toggle between Progressive or Random study in an easy manner.  Progressive Study Mode will pull new cards from the Decks in order, such that once you've seen all of the cards in Deck 1, it will also start pulling new cards from Deck 2, etc.  If Random Study Mode is selected, then new cards will come from a Deck chosen randomly.  

Right now, you can continue to enjoy the ability to pick a Study Mix from the same class on the web and we hope to bring the new Smart Study feature over to the web shortly!
