We are so excited to be able to present some ways to use AI to help create flashcards. Currently, this is in full release on mobile and on the web. We will continually improve this user experience with additional features based on user feedback and technical improvements.
Announcements on these improvements and others can be found on our Brainscape User Feature Requests Forum, newsletters, or however you get your Brainscape news!
GENERAL INFORMATION
Where can I find these AI features?
You may find these features wherever you do your editing, either on mobile or on your desktop. Anytime you choose to add cards, or edit existing cards, you will be presented with options to improve the quality or creation time with our AI features.
For more information about how you can access these features on mobile, click here and on the web, click here.
What does Fix With AI mean in Brainscape?
We added this tool when your content needs a little help from our friend, AI. Once you view the imported or uploaded text, you can determine if the card data/formatting could be improved. Brainscape uses ChatGPT as our AI tool currently, so this works much like it does if you use ChatGPT elsewhere.
Do I need to be Pro to use these AI features?
This is a service that Brainscape pays for and we are happy to offer this for free for our users to test out. If you are not a Pro user you will have a limit (based on file size) in terms of how many times you can use this brilliant technology for free. When you reach that limit, you will be prompted to upgrade.
Pro users can also enjoy this for free as long as they are within the daily limit (which is quite high). If you are a Pro user and hit your daily limit, you can just continue importing the next day. If you run into any issues with limits, you can contact our support team at support@brainscape.com for further assistance.
Some things to keep in mind:
- For performance reasons, there are limits to the file size you can import, and if you have exceeded the appropriate limit, you will receive an message.
- You can use these features with brand new decks, or add cards using AI features to existing decks/cards.
- Once the cards have been imported into Brainscape, you'll be able to easily edit or delete individual flashcards as needed.
- In some cases ChatGPT likes to do strange things converting flashcards to new languages. We are working on trying to make ChatGPT smarter in this realm. (Let us know if you hit a speed bump.)
- Occasionally, Chat GPT will not adhere to the number of flashcards you have requested. This is not something Brainscape can overwrite at this time.
USING AI FEATURES ON MOBILE
How the AI features work on mobile
When creating a new deck, adding to an existing deck, or editing an existing deck, you’ll have the option to either Type Flashcards, Import/Paste Cards, Tell AI What I Want, or Delete Deck.
Here is an example of one way you can access these features on mobile, when adding cards to a new deck. (For a full list of all the ways you can access these features on mobile, go here.)
.
When adding cards to a new deck, and adding cards, you'll get the sliding menu option you see on this second screen. If you choose to Import/Paste your cards (as well as other Manual/AI options), follow the dialog on the final screen to either cut/paste
IMPORT/PASTE CARDS
If you choose to Import/Paste Cards from the slider, you'll be taken to the below screen where you can determine if you'd like to: Paste a list of Q&A or vocab words in the space provided, upload a file, upload an image, or use the camera to take a photo of study materials.
Import options: use the top section to paste a list, or choose one of the below options to upload an image or file.
Steps for Adding or Uploading Information
After you've performed one of the actions from above, you'll have a chance to Analyze the text that has been pasted or uploaded from another source. Once you hit that Analyze, you will be presented with a PREVIEW of the flashcards.
. .
The above screens are similar regardless of whether you choose to upload a file, upload and image, or use your camera to take a picture of study material.
Steps for reviewing the imported / uploaded information
On the 'Do these look right to you' screen, you'll have the chance to review the information. If you don't like the way it looks, you can 'Cancel' to exit out and try again with another file.
Otherwise, you can of course, accept the cards as is, OR you can, choose to fix these information with AI. This will take a few minutes and then when the operation is complete, you will be able to review the flashcards. You will have another chance to review the flashcards on an updated 'Do these look right to you?' screen with hopefully an improved view of the cards. You may then follow the prompts on the screen.
During preview mode, you can choose to accept the format or use our AI tool to fix your formatting.
If you decided to 'Add these cards' you'll be taken to the newly created Deck and you can begin studying it. If you exceeded uploaded a huge file, there is a chance you may receive a message letting you know that you need to Upgrade to continue uploading, or if you are a Pro user who has exceeded their daily limit, you may need to upload a smaller file. Keep in mind you need to upload something pretty huge in order to exceed your daily limit (Pro user). For free users, we allow you to be able to sample this with a decent sized file too to see how you like it.
TELL AI WHAT I WANT
This option is a fantastic tool to use when you don't have any existing materials on the topic and want to use AI to help you accelerate your card creation. The steps are pretty simple for this experience:
- You'll be prompted to add your information to the 'Tell AI Want I want Modal. On this screen you can let the tool know up to how many flashcards you'll want. NOTE: the exact amount may not be created, but this is a guideline for the tool
- You can type up to 50 characters to describe information about your flashcard content (all about the human pancreas; historic sites in Rome; vocab words travelers should know)
- If you choose the ADVANCED option on this modal, you can choose in which language you'd like the Q/A cards to be created.
- The AI generator will do it's thing and then you'll have a chance to take a look and the content and accept the cards or cancel.
- The final screen will include your brand new flashcard deck, ready to Study!
Overview of the Tell AI What I Want flow
SUMMARIZE FROM CONTENT
Another way that you can use this excellent feature for creating flashcards is to have Brainscape's AI tools, 'Summarize from Content'. Essentially, you are asking Brainscape to do all the work to convert your class materials or notes into flashcards for you - make hundreds of flashcards in second!
The experience is similar to the other AI flows, and you will choose to 'Summarize from Content', either when creating new flashcards, or adding flashcards to an existing deck.
- Based on the format of your materials, you'll select how you want to add the content. Please note that some file types are not supported, so you will just copy/paste the raw text from some file types that aren't ready for this first release;
- Once you've uploaded the file, image, or taken a picture, you can 'Analyze' the data (remember it may look a bit odd in this format);
- The 'Do these look right to you' screen allows you to do a quick check to ensure you like the way AI treated your file. You can then add the cards right into your new deck and begin studying!
USING AI FEATURES ON THE WEB/DESKTOP
As on mobile, you can access AI features from the Class Dashboard, or from the Editor. You can incorporate AI into newly created decks, or decks where you want to add new cards. For more detailed directions about how to access all these steps on the web, click here.
IMPORT/PASTE FLASHCARDS & fix with AI
Once you click on 'Import/Paste Flashcards' from the link on the dashboard, or after clicking the 'Add Cards' button next to your new deck and selecting the 'Import/Paste Flashcards' button, you will have two options: Paste List or Upload a File.
These are the two choices you will have for importing information into a new flashcard deck. (above)
.
The image on the left shows the Paste List modal with text from a spreadsheet copied and pasted right into the field on the modal. The image on the right shows a file uploaded from this users computer.
Once you have either copied/pasted into the Paste List field, or you have added your file for import into the Upload File modal, you will be able to 'Analyze' that file. This allows you to be able to look at it before it is added to a new deck in your Brainscape class. Once you do that, you will be able to preview the flashcards. You will then have three choices, one of which allows you to:
- No, Fix with AI: this selection allows you to apply AI (we use ChatGPT) to 'fix' or improve your flashcards. This can mean various things depending on the state of your data.
.
In the above images, the user has the option to either have AI polish the data, or to add the flashcards as is into the existing Class. If 'No, Fix with AI' is chosen, the user will see the dialog box on the right with one more chance to see the cards before they are added to the Class.
SUMMARIZE FROM CONTENT
This feature is available from either the dashboard, when, clicking the 'Add Cards' button, or from the Editor, by clicking the icons on the top right of the Editor. Essentially, you are converting pasted text or an uploaded file of your coursework, notes, handouts to flashcards with the magic of AI technology.
From the Dashboard, this is the modal you will see:
From the Editor, you will click the icon highlighted below, and then be brought to the following modal where you can choose how you will add your materials. Follow the instructions on the screen.
TELL AI WHAT I WANT
Similarly to the way the other options work, you can either access this feature from the dashboard, by clicking the 'Add Cards' button next to a deck and you will be presented with the following modal.
Or you may, click the icon on the editor (top right or bottom left), and choose this option to add more cards to an existing deck using this functionality.
This modal allows you to specify approximately how many cards you would like created, add in a clear, and descriptive prompt to help guide the AI, and also decide if you want the Question or Answer side created in a ChatGPT-supported language. (Click Advanced to check this out.)
We appreciate your feedback and thoughts as we continue to evolve our UI and the related AI technology. Feel free to send a message to support@brainscape.com.
